I have started to collect variety of publications. I will analyse them individually and make comments HERE but please refer to my ADDITIONAL RESEARCH FILE to see those publications.
1) THE BIG ISSUE MAGAZINE - I like the magazine cover; black and white pictures and its primitive style insinuate that the issue is about Outsider Art. The red title stands out well - almost blinding. Inside the magazine has a clean and fresh look with its collection of articles.
2) OUTSIDER AND MARGINALISED ARTIST WORKSHOP PACKS (1-7) these are simple guides about variety of artists, their biography and their work. The layout here, again, is clean and simplistic, which in a way says a lot about the minimalism of the work. White background in my opinion plays a big role when it comes to showing/exhibiting art work. The only mishap in my opinion is that the font is too big.
I think, Kathy - my client would like similar idea of short leaflet about her work.
3) OUTSIDE IN CATALOGUE -I love this design! pictures speak more then words here. Layout, colours, choice of font, stock quality look great and work well together. Quality of the imagery also is of a high standard. I am sure that one day I will be able to create high standard designs.
4) CONTEMPORARY EYE: CROSSOVERS another catalogue designed for Pallant House Gallery, professional and high quality. Hierarchy kept throughout the design via either colours, bold font or its size.
5) AIMS - ART IN MIND LEAFLET- the difference in design in comparison with the previous publications is visible. Firstly, in my opinion there is no need for the background, because it 'melts' the writing. The grey colour of the font disperses. On the back of the leaflet in the first sentence there is, I think, slight increase in size of the font in order to highlight the importance of it. Unfortunately that hasn't been achieved successfully; I would either change the font, increase the size or used different colour. In my opinion there is too many images. The quality of the stock is good. Overall this leaflet is poorly designed.
6) REFLECTIONS CATALOGUE - much better designs for AIMS. i like the size of this catalogue. Legible, clean and well designed. I can surely spot the professional design and of someone who hasn't mastered the principles of graphic design.
7) TIM RICHMOND PHOTOGRAPHY LEAFLET - three folded design. I like the fonts used for the title and the body. Simple layout works well, apart from the background. This shade of green is too dark and the black font does not work with it. I would used same colour as the title (or none at all) in order for the font to be more legible. Otherwise I like it.
8) TMS THE MIDLANDS SINFONIA LEAFLET - edge to edge layout of the cover gives, in my opinion a claustrophobic feel. Inside, unless it has been folded wrongly but there is lack of margin set. The paragraphs set in Align Right confuse the eye, in my opinion. Similarly the other paragraphs set on: Justify with last line align left, does not work, it creates lack of consistency. I also think that some images are low res.
9) CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR WILDMOOR OAK PUB AND RESTAURANT LEAFLET - I like the font of the title and the simple logo of the pub. Snowflake background I think it should be of a blue shade. I think that the leaflet could be improved on hierarchy and principles of design. The same font as used for the title on : Starters, Main course etc words should increase in size because of its legibility. I like the images that are made in a form of a stamp or a coin form.
10) FASHION FUTURES 2025 - LEVI STRAUSS & CO - I like this leaflet on sustainable fashion design. Pastel colours always work well with sustainability - earthy look. The font is perfectly matched for the title - stitches, sawing. The design in my opinion is well structured and adhered to principles of graphic design. Good quality and recycled stock as well as veg based inks are chosen appropriately for the message inside. Beautiful, clean design! I love it.
